Imagine that you just got into your dream college. You’ve been working countless hours during your past 4 years of high school to get to this point, and this is the exciting moment that tells you that it all paid off. Now, imagine knowing that there was a 75% chance that you wouldn’t graduate before you even stepped foot on campus. Well, this is a real statistic that applies to low-income, minority, and first-generation students who attend college. This is also the statistic that BestFit hopes to eliminate.
In February of 2018 Rebecca Kwee and Asha Owens Co-Founded this amazing company after winning the EdTech Innovation Award. Their mission was to use their $100,000
grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to build a service that helps any college student to find the resources they need to succeed. Their user-friendly website provides a simple solution for students who are looking for affordable resources in their area. All you have to do is choose your location and the service you’re looking for, and BestFit does the rest by finding the best resources near you! Their platform includes resources for food, housing, physical and mental health, transportation, internet, education, and much more! BestFit connects students with a wide variety of solutions to problems they may be facing. This allows them to focus on what’s most important during college, their education.
With the spread of COVID-19, the lives of people across the globe have completely changed. We’ve moved to a completely online format, and this has been a challenge for many students and businesses alike. BestFit, however, has risen to the challenge and is continuing to make a positive impact on college students. They’ve moved from their Techstars office to remote work, and are gearing their company towards students stranded on college campuses. Many low-income students and international students that were unable to return to their homes on such short notice have been struggling to perform academically while wondering how they will get reliable Wifi or where they will get food. However, with BestFit, students that fall into these categories can get back to adjusting to the task at hand for all students, academic success.
In the future, BestFit hopes to become the “go-to experts for institutions wanting to redesign the way young adults seek and receive help”. This inspiring startup is built on true passion for helping young college students as they continue to grow across the country and around the world in the future!
